How Basketball Goals Are Made

How a basketball goal is made determines how it performs, but the actual manufacturing process is rarely something buyers get to see. What follows is a stage-by-stage account of how First Team basketball goals are manufactured in Hutchinson, Kansas, from raw US-mill steel through finished, packaged system.

Every product starts with a concept developed in conversation with customers and the dealer network. Careful attention is paid to the expected user experience and desired performance level when designing the product, since a residential portable for a driveway and a heavy-duty competition wall mount face very different demands on the same fundamental geometry.

Once a direction is approved, the design moves to CAD. Computer-aided design tools determine steel thickness and dimensions for every structural component. From the CAD model, a prototype is produced and tested. Test results feed back into the design, the design is revised, and the prototype-test-revise cycle repeats until a final design is approved for production.

Steel Selection

Production begins with raw steel. First Team sources only US-mill steel in what the industry calls “pickled and oiled” condition. Pickling is an acid bath that strips mill scale (the iron oxide layer that forms on steel during hot rolling) and surface impurities from the steel. The light oil coating applied afterward protects the cleaned surface from flash rust during transport and storage. The combination produces a substrate that is rust resistant for the duration of the fabrication and welding processes.  This ensures the steel is rust free when it reaches the paint line wash and powder coat paint booth.

US steel is typically higher quality than foreign imported steel, and the pickled-and-oiled condition produces a clean substrate that the coating process depends on. The coating decisions made later in the process all assume a clean start at the steel rack.

Cutting and Fabrication

From the steel rack, parts move to fabrication. Methods vary by component: laser cutting for flat plate, tube laser cutting that puts holes and mounting features directly into the posts and arms, brake forming for bent geometry, saw cutting for stock cut to length, and CNC machining for precise holes and threaded features.

After cutting, every part is inspected and deburred. Deburring is the process of removing the small jagged edges and metal slivers that cutting tools leave behind. Burrs that survive into the welding stage interfere with how parts seat in the weld fixture, and burrs that survive into the coating stage leave thin spots in the finish. Removing them by hand at this stage is unglamorous work that determines how cleanly every subsequent stage runs.  Once parts are fabricated, they move on to the welding phase.

Welding is not only a skill but an art. The difference between a skilled welder and a novice not only shows up in the appearance of the seam at delivery; it shows up after a decade of repeated impact loading, when a poorly welded joint begins to crack and a properly-welded one does not. Each weld stage uses a weld fixture, a precision jig that holds each piece exactly where it needs to be while the welder bonds the assembly together. Fixtures eliminate the alignment errors that would otherwise come from welding a complex assembly by eye, and they let a skilled hand-welder produce consistent geometry across hundreds of identical assemblies. Hand-welded joints carry the kind of force a basketball post sees when a player hangs from the rim. Spot welding has a place in sheet metal work at low loads but has no place in the load path of a structural pole.

After welding, every assembly is inspected. Excess weld splatter is brushed off, and any joint that does not meet specification gets reworked before the part moves to the coating line.

Surface Preparation and Powder Coating

A coating is only as good as the surface underneath it. Long-term exposure to UV and moisture is the primary factor in the rust degradation of steel, and a good coating is the primary defense against it. First Team’s coating process begins with a multi-stage chemical wash that removes any residual oil, fingerprint, or processing contaminant from the welded assembly. After the wash, parts run through an oven that flashes off the wash liquid so the surface is bone dry when it reaches the powder coat paint booth.

In the paint booth, parts are coated with a specially formulated powder designed to melt under high temperature. The coated part returns to the oven, where the heat melts the powder and bonds it to the steel as a continuous, fused film. Standard powder coating produces an excellent finish on its own.

Many First Team products receive a two-pass treatment that goes further. The first pass applies an epoxy primer powder that bonds directly to the steel; the second pass applies the finish-color powder over the top. The epoxy undercoat adds an exceptional layer of corrosion protection underneath the visible finish, which matters most on systems that face years of outdoor rain, sun, and humidity.

Rim Manufacturing and Testing

The ring is formed from high-tensile steel rod, welded closed, and welded to a steel mounting plate that bolts directly to the post structure rather than to the backboard. Direct-mount rim design transfers the force of a dunk or a hung rim into the post and structural frame instead of into the backboard glass, which is the single most common failure mode on goals where the rim is mounted only to the board. Breakaway rims add a calibrated spring assembly to the rim base. The spring allows the rim to hinge downward under a player’s weight and return to position after release, absorbing the force of aggressive play without transferring it into the backboard or mounting hardware. The spring rate determines how much force is required to flex the rim and how cleanly it returns to level.

Every rim is tested before it ships. NCAA Division I rules require rims in every arena to be tested annually before the season for rebound elasticity, with energy absorption between 35% and 50% and no more than a 5% differential between the two rims in a single arena. Glass backboards are assembled by hand. The printed and drilled tempered glass is laid on a working surface, a perimeter cushion is installed around the edge of the glass, and the aluminum trim is positioned and secured around the assembly. The glass and the trim must both meet a precise thickness for the trim to lock into place without stressing the glass. From there, the framework is locked in with corner brackets and the rim support hardware is installed. Final Assembly and Hardware

At final assembly, the post, extension arm, backboard, rim, and hardware come together as a complete kit. For in-ground systems, ground sleeve and anchor hardware is kitted alongside the post assembly.  Hardware bags, decals, and installation documentation are assembled in the same area so that what ships to the dealer or end customer is a complete kit with nothing left to source separately.

Every assembly is inspected at this stage. Decals are applied, hardware is verified against the packing list, and any cosmetic touch-up needed after handling is completed before the system moves to packaging.

Finished assemblies receive a final inspection and are placed in packaging designed for the specific product. Heavier institutional and competition systems require custom crating or palletizing to protect during freight transport. From the finished goods area, units ship to the dealer who placed the order.

A school that needs a replacement bracket for a wall mount installed five years ago calls a local dealer who can pull the part from First Team’s domestic inventory rather than waiting on an overseas shipment. Safety padding for poles, columns, bases and support structures is cut and sewn in-house. Industrial-grade vinyl is cut to pattern and sewn on heavy-duty machines, then finished to fit the specific component it protects. The sewn cover is then stuffed with the proper cushion foam typically 1.5-2” thick depending on the pad type.  Pole pads wrap a square or round post, and base pads enclose the ballast assembly on a portable system.  Custom column and wall pads are also made to fit customer specific needs.

In-house production is what makes the 16-color padding palette and the custom lettering feature practical. Schools and teams can specify branded padding in their colors with their team name without waiting on an overseas production run, and an institution that orders a system today can have matching padding shipped on a domestic lead time.
