Complete Fixed Height Basketball Goals for Every Setting
Fixed height basketball goals are the most durable type of in-ground basketball system. With no adjustment mechanism to maintain or replace, they hold up under heavy daily use in settings where reliability matters most. First Team manufactures eight fixed height models spanning home courts, school playgrounds, recreation centers, public parks, and heavy-duty institutional facilities. Every system ships complete with post, extension arm, backboard, rim, and hardware.
Although called "fixed height," the extension arm on every First Team model can be repositioned along the post during installation, giving facilities control over rim height before the system is locked into place. Ground sleeve and bolt-down baseplate options are available across the lineup for post removal or surface-mounted installation.
How to Choose the Right Fixed Height Basketball Goal
Post size and extension distance are the two decisions that matter most. Larger posts provide more rigidity under aggressive play, and longer extensions create more safe clearance between the pole and the playing area. First Team fixed height goals are built in two construction families, each designed for different environments.
Square tube (powder coated): The Sport, Legacy, Legend Jr., and Legend use one-piece square steel posts with powder coat finishes. Posts range from 4"x4" on the Sport and Legacy to a massive 6"x6" on the Legend. Extension distances range from 24" to 66". These models suit home courts, school courts, churches, and supervised recreational facilities where appearance and performance are both priorities. The Legend and Legend Jr. are available in Dual packages that mount a second backboard and rim on the opposite side of the post, maximizing playing area on a single foundation.
Round galvanized (schedule 40): The Renegade, RuffNeck, Brute, and Tyrant use round galvanized schedule 40 steel posts designed for maximum weather resistance in unsupervised outdoor environments. Posts range from 4.5" OD on the Renegade and RuffNeck to 6 5/8" OD on the Tyrant. The Brute and Tyrant feature a nose-cone backboard mounting design that permanently locks the backboard to the post with a through-bolt, and both carry a Lifetime Unconditional Warranty.
Choosing a Backboard for a Fixed Height Goal
Backboard material is one of the most important decisions for fixed height goals because many are installed in outdoor or unsupervised settings where the backboard takes the most abuse.
Tempered glass delivers the best ball response and is standard for competition and gymnasium play. First Team offers both clear and smoked tempered glass for outdoor courts where glare is a concern. The tradeoff is that a single impact from a thrown object can shatter a glass backboard, making it impractical where supervision is limited.
Acrylic provides good ball response with better impact resistance than glass. It is the most popular choice for home courts and supervised recreational settings. For a detailed comparison, see our guide on glass vs acrylic backboards.
Steel and aluminum are the most vandal-resistant options. Perforated aluminum reduces wind load on outdoor installations. Steel backboards are virtually indestructible but produce a different ball response than glass or acrylic.
Fiberglass is a durable, weather-resistant option available on select models for outdoor use.
Backboard sizes range from 48" on entry-level residential packages to regulation 72" on institutional systems.
Manufactured in Hutchinson, Kansas
First Team manufactures fixed height basketball goals in Hutchinson, Kansas. Direct-mounted rims transfer force into the post rather than the backboard, which prevents the backboard breakage common on goals where the rim is mounted only to the backboard. Safety padding for posts and backboards is available on most models in 16 colors, and custom lettering is offered on select padding options for facility branding. Ground sleeve accessories are available for post removal without disturbing the concrete foundation.
Frequently Asked Questions
Are fixed height basketball goals really fixed at one height?
The rim height is fixed once installed, but every First Team model allows the extension arm to be repositioned along the post during installation. This means the rim height can be set at any point before the arm is locked into place. Once secured, the height does not change without loosening the mounting hardware.
What is the difference between a square tube post and a round galvanized post?
Square tube posts use one-piece steel construction with a powder coat finish and are designed for home courts, schools, and supervised facilities. Round galvanized posts use schedule 40 steel with a hot-dip galvanized finish that resists corrosion without paint, making them better suited for unsupervised outdoor environments like parks and public playgrounds where weather exposure and vandalism are concerns.
What extension distance do I need?
Extension distance is the gap between the post and the backboard face. For regulation play, 48" or more is recommended to provide safe clearance behind the baseline. Shorter extensions (24" to 36") work for residential driveways and smaller courts where space is limited. For playgrounds and parks where aggressive play is expected, 66" to 72" extensions keep the post well away from the playing area.
Can a fixed height basketball goal be removed after installation?
Yes. First Team offers ground sleeve accessories for every fixed height model. The ground sleeve is set in concrete, and the post slides into the sleeve. When the post needs to be removed, it lifts out of the sleeve without disturbing the concrete foundation. Bolt-down baseplate options are also available as an alternative to direct burial.
What backboard material is best for a public playground?
Steel or aluminum. Both resist vandalism and weather far better than glass or acrylic. Perforated aluminum reduces wind load and is virtually maintenance-free. Tempered glass delivers the best playing experience but is vulnerable to deliberate impact damage in unsupervised settings.
What does a Lifetime Unconditional Warranty cover?
The Lifetime Unconditional Warranty on the Brute and Tyrant covers the post and structural components against any failure, for any reason, for the life of the product. This is the strongest warranty in the fixed height basketball goal category and reflects the construction quality of these heavy-duty playground systems.
