Choosing basketball equipment for a school, recreation center, church, park, or community facility is a different process than choosing one for a home driveway. Institutional buyers need equipment that holds up under heavy daily use, serves multiple age groups, meets regulatory or compliance standards, and justifies the expense to administrators or a budget committee. First Team manufactures over 30 basketball goal models, and more than half are built for institutional and commercial settings. This guide walks through every model relevant to gymnasiums, schools, recreation centers, churches, camps, parks, and HOA-maintained courts, organized by the decisions you need to make.
If you are still deciding between the major types of basketball goals, start with our basketball goal buying guide.
Permanent Installation or Portable?
The first decision is whether your facility can commit to a permanent installation or needs the flexibility of a portable system.
Permanent installation includes wall mount, in-ground fixed height, and in-ground adjustable goals. All require construction: wall-mounted systems bolt to the building structure, and in-ground systems require concrete footings. Permanent goals provide maximum stability and durability, and they are the standard for dedicated basketball courts. Choose permanent when the court location will not change and the budget allows for installation labor.
Portable goals require no construction. They roll into position on built-in wheels and use a weighted base for stability. Portable goals range from entry-level institutional models for churches and recreation centers to NCAA-compliant competition systems used in fieldhouses and outdoor tournament courts. Choose portable when the court space is shared with other activities, when goals need to move between indoor and outdoor locations, or when installation is not feasible.
Many facilities use both. Wall mounts serve the primary gymnasium while portables handle auxiliary courts, outdoor practice areas, or temporary event setups.
Wall Mount Goals for Indoor Gymnasiums
Wall mount goals are the standard for indoor gymnasiums because they keep the playing area completely free of poles and bases. First Team’s wall mount lineup includes two families: the SuperMount (fixed position) and the FoldaMount (side-folding for multi-use spaces), plus two lighter-duty options for smaller facilities.
Do You Need the Goals to Fold?
If the backboard can stay in position at all times, a fixed SuperMount is the most straightforward and cost-effective choice. Most multi-use gyms can accommodate a fixed wall mount without interference.
If the backboard and extension arm physically need to be out of the way for other activities such as volleyball net systems, stage setups, or banquet configurations, a FoldaMount allows the entire assembly to swing flat against the wall when clearance is needed. FoldaMount systems fold from the floor using a hand crank without tools or ladders. This matters in practice because systems that require ladders or special equipment to fold tend to stay deployed permanently, defeating the purpose of a folding design.
How Much Extension Distance Do You Need?
Extension distance is the measurement from the wall to the face of the backboard. It determines how far the playing area sits from the wall and must align with your court markings. All SuperMount and FoldaMount models allow the extension distance to be fine-tuned during installation, so the backboard can be positioned to match existing floor lines without costly rework.
Five SuperMount models and three FoldaMount models cover the full range of gymnasium depths:
- SuperMount01 — 12” extension. Designed for shooting stations and practice walls where playing area is at a premium. Not intended for full-court play.
- SuperMount23 — 24” to 36” extension. For smaller gyms and facilities with limited depth between the wall and the baseline.
- SuperMount46 / FoldaMount46 — 48” to 72” extension. The most common range for standard gymnasium installations.
- SuperMount68 / FoldaMount68 — 72” to 96” extension. Larger gymnasiums with more clearance between the wall and the court.
- SuperMount82 / FoldaMount82 — 96” to 144” extension. Maximum extension for competition facilities and gymnasiums where the baseline sits far from the wall.
All SuperMount and FoldaMount systems use solid square tubing construction with black powder coat finish, dense southern yellow pine mounting boards, safety chains, and breakaway rims. Backboard options span glass, steel, fiberglass, and acrylic in sizes from 36”x54” to 42”x72”. Every system is covered by a Lifetime Limited Warranty.
Lighter-Duty Wall Mount Options
Not every facility needs a full commercial wall mount system. Two models serve smaller gyms, practice facilities, and community spaces where a lighter-duty system is appropriate.
The WallMonster is a crank-adjustable wall mount that accepts backboards up to 42”x72” in acrylic, tempered glass, or steel. It can be installed at either a 36” or 48” offset from the wall. At the 48” offset the rim adjusts from 10’ to 7’6”, and at the 36” offset it adjusts from 10’ down to 6’6”. The removable crank handle prevents unauthorized adjustment. The WallMonster suits church fellowship halls, practice gyms, and recreation centers where height adjustability and a regulation-size backboard are needed without the cost of a full SuperMount installation.
The VersiVector is a spring-assist crank-adjustable wall mount with a 36” extension and backboards up to 36”x60”. It adjusts from 10’ to 7’ with a removable crank handle. The VersiVector is a budget option for youth programs, community centers, and smaller multi-purpose rooms.
Portable Goals for Gymnasiums, Schools, and Outdoor Courts
Portable basketball goals serve facilities that need to clear the court floor for other activities, move goals between indoor and outdoor locations, or avoid the cost of permanent installation. First Team’s institutional and competition portables are built to a different standard than residential models. They are heavier, use larger extension distances to position the base off-court for safety, and include floor load ratings for gymnasium surfaces.
Institutional Portables
Three models serve schools, recreation centers, churches, and camps. All three adjust from 10’ down to 6’6” using a hand crank mechanism and feature drop-down extension arms for passage through standard doorways.
- Rampage — 30” extension, worm gear crank adjustment. The entry point for institutional portable basketball. The hinging extension arm drops the backboard below standard door height for transport in and out of gymnasiums and garages. First Team’s most popular portable for facilities that store goals between uses.
- Fury — 48” extension. The base sits off-court at regulation height for player safety. Designed for adult recreation centers, churches, and elementary schools. Floor load: 180 psi rolling, 140 psi stationary. Acrylic and tempered glass backboards from 36”x48” to 36”x60”.
- Thunder — 48” extension, backboards up to 42”x72” in acrylic or glass. Stable enough to withstand slam dunks without tipping. Floor load: 275 psi rolling, 210 psi stationary. Lifetime Superior Warranty. Forklift required for delivery. The Thunder is the strongest institutional portable before stepping up to competition grade.
Competition Portables
Three models serve fieldhouses, competition gymnasiums, and outdoor tournament courts. All three use spring-aided pin adjustment from 10’ to 6’, padded bases (front, sides, and back), and 8” non-marking casters. All require a forklift for delivery unloading.
- Storm — Adjustable extension from 54” to 66”. Backboards from 36”x60” to 42”x72” in acrylic or glass. Floor load: 325 psi rolling, 325 psi stationary. The entry point for competition portable basketball.
- Tempest — 66” fixed extension with upper and lower boom supports. Comes standard with the FT235 42”x72” competition tempered glass backboard, FT196 Full-Tilt 180-degree breakaway rim, bolt-on backboard padding, and boom pad. Floor load: 350 psi. Rear hold-down kits available. These are the same backboard and rim components used in high schools and colleges throughout the country.
- Hurricane — 96” extension, meeting all floor layout requirements for official basketball. Same FT235 competition glass backboard, FT196 breakaway rim, and full padding package as the Tempest. Optional rear hold-downs included as required by NCAA and NHSF for competition portable goals. Floor load: 350 psi. The Hurricane is First Team’s competition standard.
Indoor vs. Outdoor Considerations for Portable Goals
Portable goals work in both environments. When selecting backboard material for a portable that will be used outdoors, tempered glass is appropriate for supervised settings and organized play. Acrylic provides good ball response with better impact resistance for general outdoor use.
Powder coat finishes on all First Team portables provide weather protection for outdoor use. For facilities that use the same portable indoors and outdoors, pay attention to floor load ratings. Ratings listed above are measured in psi on the wheels and foot pads. Higher floor load can damage gymnasium surfaces, so confirm compatibility with your flooring before purchase.
Fixed Height Goals for Outdoor Courts and Playgrounds
Fixed height in-ground goals are the standard for outdoor institutional courts, parks, playgrounds, school yards, and HOA-maintained community areas. With no adjustment mechanism, they offer maximum durability and the lowest maintenance requirements of any goal type. First Team offers two construction families for institutional fixed height goals: square tube (powder coated) and round galvanized.
How Much Abuse Will the Goal Face?
This is the defining question for outdoor institutional goals. A supervised school court with scheduled use has different durability requirements than an unsupervised public park that is accessible 24 hours a day. Backboard material and post size should both match the expected level of use.
For supervised settings where tempered glass backboards are viable, square tube construction provides a premium playing experience. For unsupervised settings where vandal resistance and weather durability are the priority, round galvanized construction with steel or aluminum backboards is the standard. For a comparison of backboard materials, see our guide on glass vs. acrylic backboards.
Square Tube Construction (Powder Coated)
Square tube goals use one-piece steel posts with 3/16” wall thickness and powder coat finish. They accept the widest range of backboard materials, including First Team’s Response tempered glass backboards for authentic gymnasium-quality ball response outdoors. Both models are available in Dual packages that mount a second extension arm, backboard, and rim on the opposite side of the post to serve two courts from a single pole.
- Legend Jr. — 5”x5” post, 52” extension, six 5/8” high-tensile bolts (not U-bolts). Post buries 42” below playing surface. Lifetime Superior Warranty. Schools, supervised parks, recreation centers.
- Legend — 6”x6” post, 66” extension, six 5/8” high-tensile bolts. Post buries 48” below playing surface. Lifetime Warranty. Heavy-duty playgrounds, school campuses, premium park installations. The most rigid fixed height goal First Team manufactures.
Round Galvanized Construction
Round galvanized goals use Schedule 40 galvanized steel posts that require no paint maintenance. The galvanized finish resists corrosion without a powder coat, making these goals particularly well-suited for weather-exposed locations and coastal environments. All four models use First Team’s nose-cone backboard mounting design with a through-bolt that permanently locks the nose-cone to the post for simple backboard installation.
- Renegade — 4-1/2” OD post, 48” extension, U-bolt arm attachment (repositionable). 20-Year Limited Warranty. The entry point for commercial outdoor courts.
- RuffNeck — 4-1/2” OD post, 48” extension, nose-cone mounting with direct rim mount. Lifetime Limited Warranty. A step above the Renegade with stronger mounting and direct rim-to-post force transfer.
- Brute — 5-9/16” OD post, 72” extension. Lifetime Unconditional Warranty. Built for heavy-abuse playgrounds where standard goals fail.
- Tyrant — 6-5/8” OD post, 72” to 78” extension. Lifetime Unconditional Warranty. The largest and most rigid gooseneck playground basketball system First Team manufactures. For public courts, municipal parks, and any setting where the goal must be indestructible.
All four accept backboards in steel, aluminum, fiberglass, and acrylic, ranging from 36”x48” to 42”x72”. Posts bury 48” below the playing surface.
In-Ground Adjustable Goals for Institutional Outdoor Use
Adjustable height goals are typically associated with residential driveways, but four First Team models are built to institutional standards and serve facilities where adjustable rim height is needed outdoors. Elementary schools, churches, community centers, and summer camps that host multiple age groups benefit from the ability to lower the rim for younger players without installing separate goals at different heights.
- Attack — 4” square post (3/16” wall), 36” extension, EZ-Crank adjustment from 10’ to 5’6” with spring-assist, bolt-down anchor (relocatable), Weatherguard rust-resistant undercoat. Lifetime Superior Warranty. The entry point for institutional adjustable outdoor goals.
- Force — 5” square post (3/16” wall), 48” regulation extension, dual-strut extension arm, EZ-Crank from 10’ to 5’6” with spring-assist, bolt-down anchor, Weatherguard undercoat. Lifetime Superior Warranty. Removable crank handle prevents unauthorized height changes.
- Titan — 6” square post (3/16” wall), 48” regulation extension, double spring-assist EZ-Crank from 10’ to 5’6”, bolt-down anchor, Weatherguard undercoat, welded steel pivot bushings. Lifetime Superior Warranty. Removable crank handle. Built for aggressive play including dunking.
- Stainless Olympian — 6”x8” rectangular stainless steel post (1/4” wall), 48” regulation extension, welded dual-strut extension arm, EZ-Crank with Double Spring-Assist from 10’ to 5’6”, Low Center of Gravity pole structure, bolt-down anchor. Lifetime Superior Warranty. The largest and most rigid adjustable goal First Team manufactures, and the only one made from rust-proof stainless steel. Uniquely suited to weather-exposed and coastal locations where painted or galvanized finishes eventually fail.
All four use bolt-down anchor systems that allow the goal to be unbolted and relocated. Vandal-resistant backboard packages are available in steel, aluminum, and perforated aluminum for unsupervised or semi-supervised settings. Tempered glass and acrylic backboard options are also available for supervised locations. Frequently Asked Questions
Which First Team basketball goals meet NCAA and NHSF competition standards? The Hurricane portable meets all court layout requirements for competition portable basketball goals, including the 96” extension distance from base to backboard and optional rear hold-downs are offered.
What is the difference between SuperMount and FoldaMount? Both use the same square tube construction, mounting hardware, and backboard and rim options. The difference is that FoldaMount systems fold flat against the wall when the court is needed for other activities. The fold is operated from the floor using a hand crank, with no tools or ladders required. SuperMount systems are fixed in position. If your gym is used only for basketball, SuperMount is simpler and more economical. If the gym hosts volleyball, pickleball, assemblies, or other events, FoldaMount provides the clearance those activities require.
Which outdoor goal is best for an unsupervised public park? The Brute or Tyrant with a steel or aluminum backboard. Both use galvanized Schedule 40 posts that require no paint maintenance, and both carry a Lifetime Unconditional Warranty that covers damage from any cause. The Tyrant’s 6-5/8” post and 72” to 78” extension provide the most rigidity and the greatest safety clearance between the pole and the playing area.
Can portable basketball goals damage a gymnasium floor? Portable goals exert pressure through their wheels and foot pads, measured in psi. Higher psi can damage some synthetic gym floors. Floor load ratings for First Team portables range from 140 psi (Fury, stationary) to 350 psi (Tempest, Hurricane). Check your flooring manufacturer’s specifications for the maximum psi your floor can handle before selecting a portable model. All competition portables use non-marking casters and foot pads.
