Choosing the Right First Team Basketball Hoop for Your Home

First Team manufactures over 30 basketball goal models, and more than 20 of them are designed for residential use. This guide walks through every relevant home model and helps you match the right one to your space, your players, and how you play. If you are still deciding between the major types of basketball goals (in-ground, portable, wall mount, and others), start with our basketball goal buying guide, which covers the basics. This article assumes you are ready to choose a specific model.

The fastest way to find the right goal is to answer three questions: Can you install permanently? Who is playing? How aggressively will it be used? The sections below are organized by installation type, and within each type, models are presented from entry-level to premium so you can see exactly where each one sits in the lineup.

Which Installation Type Fits Your Home?

In-ground adjustable is the most popular choice for home driveways and backyard courts. The post is anchored in concrete, providing maximum stability, and the rim height adjusts to accommodate players of different ages. First Team offers ten in-ground adjustable models. If you can pour a concrete footing and want the most stable, best-performing system, start here.

Portable goals use a weighted base and require no permanent installation. They suit renters, shared driveways, HOA-restricted properties, and any situation where the goal needs to move. First Team offers six residential portable models.

In-ground fixed height goals have no adjustment mechanism, which makes them the most durable option. They are a strong choice for homes where all players are old enough for regulation 10-foot height and maximum longevity is the priority. Four First Team fixed height models are appropriate for residential use.

Wall mount goals attach to a wall or building structure, keeping the playing area free of poles and bases. They are a popular choice for home garages, outbuildings, and barn walls where a permanent wall or gable is available for mounting. First Team offers four residential wall mount models.

Roof mount positions the backboard over the driveway from the garage roof or overhang, with no pole in the ground. First Team's RoofMaster is designed for homes where a pole would block the driveway or where underground utilities prevent concrete work.

Poolside goals bolt to the pool deck for basketball in the water. First Team offers three poolside models ranging from fixed height to fully adjustable.

In-Ground Adjustable: Choosing from Ten Models

In-ground adjustable is the largest category because it serves the widest range of home buyers. The ten models share a common progression: as you move up the lineup, the post gets larger, the extension distance grows, the adjustment range widens, and the anchor system shifts from direct burial to bolt-down (which allows relocation). Understanding three variables will narrow your choice quickly.

How young are your youngest players?

This is the single most important question because it determines which models are viable.

Models that adjust down to 7 feet or higher suit households where all players are roughly middle school age and up. The Champ, Jam, Slam, Vector, PowerHouse 5, and PowerHouse 6 fall into this group.

Models that adjust down to 5'6" serve families with elementary-age children through adults, all on the same goal. The Attack, Force, Titan, and Stainless Olympian are the models with this range. All four use spring-assist EZ-Crank adjustment and bolt-down anchors.

How much post do you need?

Post size determines rigidity. Larger posts absorb more force with less vibration, which matters for aggressive play and dunking.

4" square posts (11 gauge / 1/8" wall) — Champ, Jam, Slam, Vector. Solid construction for standard residential play. The four models differ primarily in their adjustment mechanism and extension distance:

  • Champ — InstaJust bracket (broom handle), 18" extension. The entry point.
  • Slam — Quik-Pin with spring balance, 24" extension. Pull-pin adjustment for fast height changes.
  • Jam — Spring-aided EZ-Crank, 24" extension. Easiest to adjust in this group.
  • Vector — Front-mount EZ-Crank with spring-assist, 32" extension. The only model with a front-mounted crank, designed for installations where a wall or fence behind the post blocks rear access.

4" square post (3/16" wall) — Attack. The post is the same 4" diameter as the group above, but the wall thickness jumps from 1/8" to 3/16", making it 50% heavier. The Attack also introduces the bolt-down anchor (relocatable), Weatherguard rust-resistant undercoat, and 36" extension distance. For families who want the 5'6" adjustment floor and bolt-down convenience without moving to a larger post, the Attack is the pivot point in the lineup.

5" square posts — Force and PowerHouse 5. The Force uses a 3/16" wall thickness with a dual-strut extension arm and 48" extension (regulation distance). It adjusts from 10' to 5'6" with spring-assist. The PowerHouse 5 uses a different design philosophy: its Clearspan backboard mounting system eliminates visible hardware behind the glass for a clean aesthetic. The PowerHouse 5 adjusts from 10' to 7' and uses a 36" extension.

6" square posts — Titan, PowerHouse 6, and Stainless Olympian. The Titan is the heaviest adjustable goal in the lineup, with a 6" square 3/16" wall post, double spring-assist, and 48" regulation extension. It adjusts from 10' to 5'6" and is built for aggressive play including dunking. The PowerHouse 6 shares the 6" post diameter with the Clearspan aesthetic mounting system. The Stainless Olympian uses a 6"x8" stainless steel post with 1/4" wall thickness, making it the largest and most corrosion-resistant adjustable goal First Team manufactures.

For a deeper look at the construction details that separate premium in-ground goals from mass-market alternatives, see our premium in-ground basketball goal guide.

Do you need the goal to be relocatable?

The Champ, Jam, Slam, and Vector use direct burial installation (the post is set in concrete 36" below the surface). They are permanent unless you dig them out. All four offer optional ground sleeves that allow the post to be lifted out of the foundation without removing the concrete, and bolt-down baseplate versions are available.

The Attack, Force, Titan, Stainless Olympian, PowerHouse 5, and PowerHouse 6 all use bolt-down anchor systems. The post bolts to a baseplate set in concrete, so the entire goal can be unbolted and moved to a new location with a new footing. If your family may move in the next 10 to 15 years, a bolt-down system protects the investment.

Portable Goals for Home Use

Portable goals are the right choice when permanent installation is not possible or practical. First Team's residential portable basketball goals all use sand or concrete block filled bases with ballast weights that range from 240 to 500 pounds and one-piece steel posts that will not separate or wobble like the sectional posts found on big-box retail portables.

Six models serve home driveways and backyards:

  • RollaSport — Fixed height. The entry point for households that do not need frequent height changes. The extension arm can be repositioned with tools during setup, but height does not change during normal use.
  • OmniChamp — InstaJust bracket adjustment, 10' to 7'6". A step above sporting goods store portables with a 4" one-piece post and 14" extension.
  • OmniSlam — Quik-Pin spring-balanced adjustment, 10' to 7'. Easier height changes than the OmniChamp with a wider range and 19" extension.
  • OmniJam — Hand crank adjustment, 10' to 7'. The easiest adjustment in the Omni line since any player can turn a crank. Same 19" extension as the OmniSlam.
  • RollaJam — Spring-aided hand crank, 10' to 7'. First Team's premium home portable with a retractable post for compact storage.
  • Rampage — Worm gear style crank, adjustable from 10' to 6'. Quick and easy transport. First Team's most popular portable basketball goal when moving in and out of a garage.

All six transport by one person on hard, smooth surfaces. The OmniChamp, OmniSlam, and OmniJam use cam lever handles. The RollaSport and RollaJam use a post actuator that retracts the vertical post onto a transport wheel, allowing the unit to roll through a garage door or double doors for storage. The Rampage uses a hinging extension arm that allows the backboard to drop below standard door height when moving in or out.

For more on what separates these from institutional and competition portables, see our guide on things to consider when purchasing a portable basketball goal.

Fixed Height Goals for Home Courts

Fixed height goals are the most durable type of in-ground system because there is no adjustment mechanism to maintain or replace. If every player in the household is old enough for regulation 10-foot height and will stay at that height, fixed height delivers maximum rigidity and longevity with the least maintenance.

Four models suit home courts:

  • Sport — 4"x4" post, 24" extension. The entry-level fixed height goal with a professional appearance at an affordable price.
  • Legacy — 4"x4" post, 36" extension. More clearance between the pole and the playing area than the Sport, with a heavier extension arm and wider backboard selection including tempered glass and aluminum.
  • Legend Jr. — 5"x5" post (3/16" wall), 52" extension. Playground-grade construction with high-tensile bolt mounting rather than U-bolts. Available in Dual packages that mount a second backboard and rim on the opposite side of the post.
  • Legend — 6"x6" post (3/16" wall), 66" extension. The most rigid fixed height goal in the residential lineup. Built for the most demanding home courts and also suitable for playgrounds. Dual packages available.

All four use powder-coated square tube construction and accept a range of backboard materials. The extension arm on each model can be repositioned along the post during installation to set the rim height before locking it into place. For a comparison of backboard materials, see our guide on glass vs. acrylic backboards.

Wall Mount Goals for Garages and Outbuildings

Wall mount goals eliminate the need for a pole in the ground by attaching directly to a wall structure. For residential use, they work well in garages, barns, outbuildings, and on exterior walls where a sturdy mounting surface is available. All four residential models mount to dense southern yellow pine boards (included) that are secured to the wall framing. The wall structure must be capable of supporting the system's weight and the stress of play, so framing and attachment points should be verified before installation.

Four models suit home use:

  • VersiSport — Fixed height, 28" extension. The entry point for wall mount basketball. Acrylic backboards from 48" to 60".
  • VersiChamp — InstaJust bracket adjustment (broom handle), 10' to 7'6" in 6" increments, ~22" extension. The adjustable version of the VersiSport with acrylic or glass backboard options.
  • VersiVector — Spring-assist hand crank, infinitely adjustable from 10' to 7', 36" extension. The removable crank handle prevents unauthorized adjustment. Acrylic or glass backboards from 48" to 60".
  • WallMonster — Spring-aided crank adjustment with removable handle. Accepts larger backboards (60" to 72") in acrylic, tempered glass, or steel. Can be installed at either a 36" or 48" offset from the wall, which affects the adjustment range: the 48" offset adjusts from 10' to 7'6", while the 36" offset adjusts from 10' down to 6'6". The WallMonster is the most versatile residential wall mount and the best choice for homes wanting gymnasium-quality backboard sizes on a wall-mounted system.

All four are covered by a Lifetime Limited Warranty.

Roof Mount: The RoofMaster

The RoofMaster is First Team's roof mount model and the solution for homes where a pole in the ground is not feasible. It mounts to a sloped or flat rooftop and positions the backboard over the driveway with approximately 37" of overhang. A ground-level hand crank adjusts the rim height from 10' to 7'6". Backboard options include acrylic and tempered glass in sizes from 48" to 60". Before ordering, be sure your roofline meets the minimum required roof height of 100".

The RoofMaster is covered by a Lifetime Limited Warranty. Professional installation is recommended to ensure proper mounting to the roof structure and weatherproofing at attachment points.

Poolside Goals: Three Models for Home Pools

511690442 9890204864421466 6032199581977103644 N

All three First Team poolside models use stainless steel posts with powder coat finishes and bolt down to the pool deck with stainless steel hardware. Each includes a zinc undercoat on other components for corrosion resistance and an ABS plastic anchor cover for a finished appearance.

  • HydroSport — Fixed height, 24" extension. The entry point for poolside basketball. The extension arm can be repositioned with tools during installation.
  • HydroChamp — InstaJust adjustment with a 30" range in 6" increments, 18" extension. Height adjustability makes this the better choice when younger swimmers will be playing.
  • HydroShot — EZ-Crank adjustment, infinitely adjustable from 10' to as low as 25" above the mounting surface, 36" extension. The premium poolside option with the widest adjustment range and dual-strut extension arm. The HydroShot complete pole system is made entirely of stainless steel.

All three accept acrylic backboards in sizes from 48" to 60". Acrylic is the standard material for poolside installations because it holds up better than glass in outdoor wet environments. Do not install a tempered glass backboard above a swimming pool.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which First Team basketball goal is best for a family with young children?
The Attack, Force, Titan, and Stainless Olympian are the four in-ground adjustable models that lower to 5'6", which is appropriate for children as young as four or five. Among portables, the OmniSlam and OmniJam adjust down to 7', which works for most elementary-age players. The Attack is the most popular choice for families who want the widest adjustment range with a bolt-down anchor at a mid-range price.

What is the difference between buried installation and bolt-down?
Direct burial sets the post in concrete below ground level like a fence post. It is the most rigid installation method but is permanent. Bolt-down systems have a baseplate welded to the bottom of the post which is anchored to J-bolts embedded in the concrete, allowing the post to be unbolted and relocated. In the in-ground adjustable lineup, the Champ, Jam, Slam, and Vector use direct burial as standard (with optional bolt-down baseplate upgrades). The Attack, Force, Titan, Stainless Olympian, PowerHouse 5, and PowerHouse 6 use bolt-down anchors as standard.

How do I choose between the OmniChamp, OmniSlam, and OmniJam?
All three use the same 4" one-piece post and 500-pound sand-filled base. The difference is the adjustment mechanism. The OmniChamp uses a broom-handle bracket (most affordable). The OmniSlam uses a pull-pin system with spring balance (faster height changes). The OmniJam uses a hand crank (easiest for young players to operate). If ease of adjustment matters, the OmniJam is the best choice. If budget is the priority, the OmniChamp delivers the same core construction at a lower price.

Do I need a fixed height goal or an adjustable goal?
If every player in the household is old enough for regulation 10-foot rim height and will remain at that height, a fixed height goal provides maximum durability with no adjustment mechanism to maintain. If younger players are involved or if rim height flexibility matters for training, an adjustable goal is the better investment. The Attack through Stainless Olympian adjust low enough (5'6") to serve players from preschool age through adulthood on a single system.

Can I use a First Team portable basketball goal indoors?
Yes. First Team home portables are used in garages, barns, and indoor courts. The ballast filled base provides stability on any hard, flat surface. The RollaSport and RollaJam are particularly well-suited for indoor use because their retractable post design allows compact storage against a wall when not in use.

Can I customize the colors or add my name to the padding?
Yes. Safety padding for posts and backboards is available on most models in 16 colors. Custom lettering is also available on select padding options, allowing you to add a family name, house number, or team logo to the post pad.
